Officially Christmas

24th December 2004

In my fabric cell I'm returning things to my hospital bag when my mobile rings.  I gingerly try to retrieve it before disturbing the other women on the ward.  I move with the ease of a woman who's just been sawn in half.  The scar on my stomach throbs and shock has stopped my legs from working properly.

In the clear plastic cot by my bed is my little pink bundle with masses of black hair - my nan was right, heartburn did mean a hairy baby.

My phone located I see it's my sister and when I answer it she says to me 'Can you hear it?'  At her end she turns the music up in her kitchen & I hear Jona Lewis singing his famous Christmas song.  'Can you hear it?' she repeats. 'Yes' I reply, 'it's Christmas'.  'Had you heard it before?' my big sister asks.  'No' I replied 'I thought Christmas had been cancelled this year'.  'No it hasn't' she sobbed 'and you've given us all the best present'.

For as long as I can remember Jona Lewie has meant it's Christmas.  The least Christmassy of Christmas songs about troops in the trenches in WWI it just resonates with me.

I remember my nan making us all get down on the floor to do the 'Oops upside your head' dance to it

I remember the desaturated 80s video

I remember being with my mate Phil driving home from university for Christmas & playing on the radio.

'It's officially Christmas' I declare once I have heard it.

I didn't know that my sister felt the same about it until a few years ago but it's a tradition now.  We text each other to say 'Radio 2 now, Jona Lewie'.  I got a text from her yesterday telling me that she's heard half of it now so it's a fraction Christmas.

Listening to it on CD is OK (as I am doing right now), but an impromptu broadcast makes it official.

Christmas/Birthday thank you

I am currently attempting to get my biggest girl to write her thank you letters for her birthday (just before Christmas) and Christmas presents.  It feels like I'm banging my head against the wall.  We have 17 more to write and even when I can get her to sit down at the table with the strawberry pen I bought her to bribe her into writing them, can I get her to focus?  Can I bugger!

It would be so much quicker to do it myself, but I want to instill good manners in my children (and she can write now so there is no excuse for her not to do it herself).  But oh my god, she is driving me mad!!!
On top of which I am being hassled by my mother for letters not written yet to her friends.  Can she not remember what it was like when we were children?  I know I was terrible at writing my thank yous....Oh

PS If you are reading this and you are a friend or family member thank you for the presents, this will reach you much quicker than the scrawled note from my girl x

Christmas all wrapped up...

I think I'm done, I think I'm done - tra la la la la!  Frantic additional present for MR DOMADQ purchased this morning is all I need to wrap now.  I can now relax or start my homework for my writing group (I have the fear I may revert to doing it the night before it's due in!)

Food all purchased.  No more jostling with the crowds.  I AM DONE.

Now all I need to do is remember to get the turkey out of the freezer to defrost...

Christmas Blog Swap Goodies

I received my blog swap parcel (arranged through the lovely Lakota at Faith Hope & Charity Shopping)  from the equally lovely Little Dotty Bird earlier this week and felt like a child on Christmas morning.  What gorgeous gorgeous things she had sent for me.  Packaged with it's very own snow & surrounded by glitzy baubles and chocolate santas (which I had to fight girls 1 & 2 for).

Look what I got!
goodies just for me

A note book to carry with me for writing ideas, birdhouse hair clip holder (no more frantic searching on a Monday morning whilst trying to round up 2 girls)

glitzy bird tree ornament, gorgeous hearts, a little piece of the beach for me (bag of shells)

I can daydream of the seaside

AND a wonderful sock monkey book for inspiration.

These have definitely inspired me to make some friends for these fellas

(I did mention I had a sock monkey obsession)

Along with all these was a personalised card adorned with RPatz which made me guffaw.

(I am like a superhero, I have to keep my identity secret ;)

Thank you thank you Dotty for such thoughtful presents.  It's amazing to think that I until a few weeks ago we hadn't 'met' and yet you've chosen so well.  I really enjoyed this swap, piecing together what kind of things to get & parcelling it all up (& not to mention receiving this one!), I'll definitely do it again. xxx
